A giclee art print is an excellent representation of the original work produced by a painter.  For matching color and quality to the masterpiece, nothing beats the giclee art print.  Birthed in the late nineteen hundreds, this type of reproduction of paintings and photographs has come to be a highly regarded art form.

Though these forms were originally created for use as proofs for lithographs, their value was quickly recognized because of their stunning color quality.  They are produced by printers.  It is not the same as the type people have in their homes.  A typical printer is equipped with four colors.  These highly specialized machines, such as the original IRIS, are outfitted with several color variations that are blended as the spray alights onto the material.  The effect of this method is remarkable.  The colors appear to be exactly the same as those produced by a paintbrush or from a photograph.  They have professional grade spray nozzles that use custom-made, archival grade pigment inks that are sprayed onto the medium for display.  The program that tells the machine the precise application of colors and to what degree to blend them, stores the details in a file.  Because the information is stored in a computer, identical reproductions can be created over and over again without any fading.  The problem with fading for a large number of reproductions is eliminated because of this technology.

Another advantage to this type of art reproduction is the ability for shops to copy the giclee art print onto a large variety of mediums.  Popular medium choices are the use of canvas and paper.  Within these choices, there is a number from which to choose.  Canvases come in a few different shades and are made with different weaves.  Although most finished products have a matte finish, applications of gloss and semi-gloss finishes can be added after the image is transferred to the cotton.  There are some various choices with paper, as well.  Most prefer to use watercolor.  Sizing can easily be adjusted.  With the touch of a few buttons, a large reproduction can be shrunk down to a miniature representation of the original piece.

This ability to change the size of the reproduction is one of the qualities that makes a giclee art print more affordable.  Many shops charge by the size, or footage, of material on which the image is being imprinted.  This means that a person can order a large size and some smaller ones to go alongside to use up the spare material that exists on the side.  Since canvas art comes in rolls of pre-determined widths, this helps eliminate waste also.  In addition, the fact that the master is stored in a computer file as a template, allows for easy reproduction of any number without the large overhead costs that are associated with other methods of reproducing art.  This makes the total cost lower than other types.

Because of the ease of creating pieces that are almost identical in color, hue, and blend to the original work, the giclee art print has gained popularity at an amazing rate.  They can be found in museums around the world.  Their value has held strong in auctions and in gallery sales.  Since they can keep their color brightness for twenty-five years, if stored and displayed away from direct sunlight, they are worth the investment that many collectors have made in obtaining them.
