The paintings of G. Harvey have a way of bringing the past to life.  It is surreal to see them because one is almost completely transformed back to the time when field hands rode everywhere on horseback and life was a lot slower paced.  This is certainly true of his work entitled, “Drifting through the Oil Patch.”  In this beautiful work of art, there are derricks as far as the eye can see in a land that was once barren and open.  Oilfield workers with other hired hands ride horses into the twilight as their trusted dog runs playfully beside them.  In the distance there are two blacksmiths that are busy at work perhaps forging tools for the oilfield or maybe even horseshoes for the horses. There is even a glimpse of an older truck which ties in the coming of the new industrial revolution that is just around the corner with the old way of doing things by horse and buggy.

Even the dirt path that was obviously traveled each day for work and deliveries seems so realistic that it almost feels as if one could step into the art work and feel the ground beneath their feet.  The simplicity of the work also lends to the simplicity of the way things were so long ago.  The paintings of G. Harvey seem to make it possible to fully understand a different way of life, and this work definitely pays homage to his ability to make things feel familiar.

Another brilliant and shining example of the paintings of G. Harvey and the beauty that his work beholds is a piece entitled, “Trailing the Canyon Light.”  The first thing that strikes most people who view this beautiful piece is the way that the light coming through the canyon is captured.  It almost seems as if one is standing there being an onlooker because the light makes it seem so realistic.  It almost seems as if someone is looking out the window at these three men on horseback with their supply horse in tow.  Even the temperature seems to be accurately depicted to the point that while looking at the piece it almost seems like one might shiver from the brisk winds blowing through the rocks as the riders ride onward.  Snow on the ground and the heavy coats that are donned by the riders add to the authentic feel of the cold canyon travelers.  Patches of grass that linger on the canyon floor add more realism to the piece.  Even the canyon walls almost seem touchable as a viewer gazes at the piece.

The paintings of G. Harvey are very realistic, with the details being as carefully depicted as the subject matter of each piece of art.  He has a way of bringing to life things that were familiar long ago, but are essential in understanding life as it is known today.

The paintings of G. Harvey are a pictorial history of this great country, and they are done with pride and with a realism that is unsurpassed by any other.
