Contemporary bronze sculpture follows trends in the greater world of art.  Modern works of both abstract and figurative representations dominate the mode of contemporary bronze sculpture.  This type of representation lends itself well to the creation of current day styles of art that evoke strong feelings in the viewers.

As in ancient times, copper and tin alloy casting is an extremely popular way to create three-dimensional art.  Sometimes other metals are combined with copper in the process, such as arsenic, to provide added strength to the alloy.  The resulting representations are durable and less brittle than other metal combinations.  The unique properties of this alloy are ideal for executing popular current styles of three-dimensional work where movement is a focus of the piece.  The imagery of continuous flow can be produced with this metal alloy by giving an impression of liquid movement though the piece of solid metal.

Most current popular artwork is characterized by smooth flowing lines interrupted by sharp edges that define the dimensions of the figures.  Though details are not usually highlighted in this type of artwork, the impression and idea of the piece is communicated through the artistic representation. Emphasis is placed on the form of the artwork, in order to create the illusion of movement. This emphasis evokes a particular feeling or emotion that is related to visual stimulation.  A piece that emphasizes soft edges and lines tends to bring gentle, soothing emotions to the viewer.  Jagged and edgy representations give an upbeat and dramatic feel to a piece.  Abstract art applies these principals in creating modern pieces that stimulate the senses.  Contemporary bronze sculpture is an ideal medium for creating this type of art.

Controversy is prevalent in the interpretation of art.  This is no less true for contemporary bronze sculpture.  Igniting a fire in people is something for which it has been known for thousands of years.  Sometimes the result of such a passionate response splits the public.  Sides are chosen and public debates take place.  However, the artists’ mission is to make people think. A particular case regarding the accuracy of historical artistic representations recently caused a debate in the southwest region of the United States. There, the accuracy of guns relating to historical figure representation was the focus of the debate.  This issue was eventually resolved peacefully, but this is not always the case.  Still, the need for these public works that insight emotional responses in people is as much a vital part of the human experience in society today as it was when the technology to construct these three dimensional masterpieces was first invented.

Though the need for precise detail is not as important to contemporary bronze sculpture as it was in past metal artwork, the method of casting copper alloy figures is still vital to the art landscape.  This type of material allows for the appearance of flexibility and movement in the products.  The combination of its durability and lack of brittleness makes it an ideal candidate for the application of modern art ideas.
